Robins will be discussing his paper that examines the everyday materiality of politics in relation to the density of urban populations and their material byproducts. It tracks the recent wave of protests about sanitation access in informal settlements in South Africa and follows how city engineers have engaged with the material and political pressures and demands for the social infrastructures of dignity and ‘proper’ urban life.
Steven Robins is a professor of anthropology at Stellenbosch University.
Moderated by Sean Jacobs.
This event is sponsored by Graduate Program in International Affairs and is part of the Africa@ The New School Series.
