Urban Policy Student Davis Winslow Helps Spread News of TNS Divest Campaign

Table-SettingToday 350.org featured The New School’s Divest Campaign in their Fossil Free Updates section. TNS Divest Campaign has been gaining traction ever since increased interest early last year. On October, 23rd The New School celebrated Campus Sustainability Day focused around the school’s Divestment Campaign. Urban Policy Student Davis Winslow, Student Assistant to Academic Sustainability Initiatives was one of the many that helped coordinate the event.

The movement has been propelled by the University Student Senate’s (USS) Group-Shotrecent passing of a resolution recommending the school to divest its endowment from fossil fuel companies, the event gathered students and faculty members from across the University to talk about what divestment would mean for The New School.

The festival was capped with a video message from Bill McKibben, who encouraged the movement to press on. Bill noted the impact The New School can have as a major institution in New York City:

Ben-Divest1There in the heart of New York, it would make a huge impact. It would be a huge deal there in the cultural capital of the world and the financial capital of the world for people to be saying “hell no!” It’s wrong to wreck the climate. It’s wrong to profit from that wreckage.
