“Last week GPIA Professor Nina Khrushcheva wrote a piece for Reuters on the relationship between Ukraine and Russia in light of recent events in the region. She goes on to explain Russia has a vested interest in keeping the opposition out of power in Ukraine in favor of the pro-Russian government.
Nina is well versed on the rocky history between Russia and Ukraine as her great grandfather, Nikita Khrushcheva, was the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and played a leading role in the 1954 transfer of the now highly contested territory of Crimea, from Russia to Ukraine.  In the article, she describes that to the Kremlin, Ukraine has always been considered ‘Little Russia’. She also explains how Putin, following Boris Yeltzen’s retreat on claims of supremacy over former Soviet countries, has maintained a policy of trying to exert power over its neighbor. The article can be read in its entirety here.  Nina’s unique and knowledgeable insight has also been utilized through interviews and collaboration with the New York Times, NPR, National Geographic and among many others.
