About
Students assessed IRC’s Project Strengthening Organizations Assisting Refugees (SOAR)existing technical assistance tools, met with refugee leaders to collect their best practices, oversaw the design of interactive new tools that incorporated their voices and promising practices, and piloted new tools with refugee service providers.

Students worked with IRC staff and refugees.  GPIA students will oversaw the design of interactive new tools designed to help refugee-led organizations in branding and publicizing their work. Students made recommendations for how to creatively disseminate these throughout the IRC’s resettlement network, network of ethnic community based organizations across the U.S., and – given that the IRC does capacity-building work domestically and around the world – in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Working with IRC staff and immigrants and refugees who are leading emerging ethnic community based organizations, students did the following:

  • Based on internet research, coursework, and personal networks, identified and documented best practices related to marketing, branding, and social networking for small, community-based non-profit organizations
  • Identified ethnic community-based organizations that are using innovative communications and outreach mechanisms and reach out to them to capture their promising practices
  • Using research findings and existing written materials produced by Project SOAR, they created an interactive, practical, and accessible toolkit/guide to on external communications for ethnic community-based organizations
  • Piloted new tools via phone, email, and site visits with refugee service providers, soliciting and integrating their feedback in substantive ways
  • Designed, facilitated, and evaluated a web-based training for up to 100 ECBO leaders on marketing and communications
  • Designed and implemented a dissemination strategy for existing resources, via e-learning courses, the IRC’s internal intranet website, and the IRC’s website for ethnic community based organizations (www.EthnicCommunities.org).
