Philanthropy: the Non-profit Sector and the Moral Imagination

The course will explore the historical, legal, and philosophical bases of non-profits, beginning with the dissolution of monasteries in Great Britain. Based on approaches to altruism and the cultural foundations of charity and reciprocity, the course will focus on foundation, universities, think tanks, health, and education.

Dean Neil Grabois will lead the course, which will feature guest lectures by Warren Ilchman.

Neil Grabois is Dean of the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy. He is a mathematician and a former President of Colgate University, and former dean, provost, and chair of the department of mathematical sciences of Williams College. He spent eight years at Carnegie Corporation of New York as Vice President for Programs and Strategic Planning.

Warren Ilchman, a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, has been a professor at Berkeley, Indiana University, Boston University and the University at Albany. He has also taught at Williams and Harvard.  He has been the Asia Adviser to the Ford Foundation, executive director of the Soros Fellowship for New Americans, Director of the Indiana University Center of Philanthropy, and has served as president of Pratt Institute.
