The Journal of Urban Affairs has recently reviewed Milano assistant professor Jeff Smith’s Kindle Single, “Ferguson in Black and White.” In this piece, Smith, a former St. Louis City representative in the Missouri State Senate, examines the historical, political, economic and social context surrounding the unrest experienced in (and subsequent conversation surrounding) Ferguson, Missouri, after shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown at the hands of a Ferguson police officer. The piece also delves into the different factors that continue to pose barriers to black political power in the United States, examines the discord that exists between the government and its citizens, and proposes recommendations for addressing the root causes of this issue.
