UN Development Agenda and Social Media: What are the new frontiers?

Client: UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)

For the past few years, social media has become the biggest catalyst in community development. The United Nations System has utilized social media to advance on the UN Development Agenda. With over 10 million active users and visitors on UN system virtual communities, social networks hold a wealth of potential for innovating, mobilizing and engaging people around the globe on the work of the United Nations.

This research project could look at an overall social media strategy on how the UN can strengthen its advocacy and monitoring virtual capacity to serve the people around the world in the building of “the future we want”. In doing so, as an example, it could focus on how best to position and utilize social media to engage voices outside the UN on what the post-2015 UN Development Agenda should look like. The project could look at how other large organizations with intergovernmental oversight (such as the European Union) use social media and identify some of the lessons learned and best practices.
